SSD Optimizer - Exclude files / folders

Bic

Question

Hi,

If using the SSD Optimizer is there any way to exclude certain files / folders so not to use the SSD's and write directly to the HDDs. I store some vhdx files on the pool, and (unless just updated blocks are written onto the SSD, and not the whole file) I wouldn't want those to be written to the SSDs as the SSD's are only 240GB and the vhdx files 100GB.

Absolutely. :)

Use the File Placement Rules.  Set the rule to only use the non-SSD drives, and uncheck the "File placement rules respect real-time file placement limits set by the balancing plug-ins" option in the balancing settings.

This should force the pool to place files on the non-SSD drives instead of on the SSDs.

For the VHDX files, add "\*.?vhdx" for the text (this gets VHDX files and AVHDX files, which HyperV uses for snapshots and the like).  Or you can specify folders.

How exactly does one specify folders to exclude? do you just add \*.? to the front of the folder name?

An update here, since even having 1 ssd drivepool in the main drivepool as cache wont work (i guess), i made a storage space of the 2 ssds and added them to the main drivepool.

Now I got 330gb of SSD write cache. But I need to force DrivePool move EVERYTHING from that "disk" (again 2 ssds in SS) as soon as I am done writing to the file to make room for the next file. How do I achieve this Christopher ?

I actually stumbled upon this last night backing up my computers. Thing is, I got several platforms, so not only vhd's, and would like to exclude the disk images folders instead of particular files. Is this possible ?

Create a rule for that specific folder, Uncheck the disks that you don't want the files to reside on.

So I was experimenting a bit, when it hit me that I might do a workaround by having a pool of SSD inside the original drivepool. Will this help or is it still an issue with big files, biggest SSD must be bigger than the big file ?

Yes.  StableBit DrivePool stores the actual files on the underlying disks.  that means that any file you add to the pool must be able to fit onto the disk(s) in the pool.  So if you're using an SSD, the file must be small enough to fit on the SSD.   So, larger SSDs are a good idea, especially if you plan on using the SSD Optimizer balancer plugin.

To clarify, you want everything to be written to the SSD drive(s) and then moved off?

If so, then you want the SSD Optimizer Balancer.

https://stablebit.com/DrivePool/Plugins

Install it and enable it, and configure it.

Though, keep in mind, that if you're using duplication, you really need two disks for this. And two PHYSICAL disks.

Additionally, if you're using File Placement Rules along side of the SSD Optimizer, check the notes for recommended configuration.

And to make sure this happens immediately, make sure that in the balancing settings, that it's set to "balance immediately".

Crash in beta, full lockup even...

Huge incoming file, going from realtime dup to nothing crashes the UI. Tried restarting the svc - locked up the whole server.

guessing it was moving files in the bkg, and i cant touch it until its done, even with the file transfer stopped :)

thnx for answering!
